Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher has suggested Carlos Sainz should be punished further for his contact with Oscar Piastri during the Hungarian Grand Prix.

A system error on Sunday at the Hungaroring saw many drivers not getting blue flags when the race leaders came to lap them.

It left the front-runners heavily frustrated behind the wheel, including Piastri, who was lucky to emerge unscathed following an incident with Sainz.

As Piastri attempted to lap the Williams driver, who was in a battle with Fernando Alonso, contact was made between the pair, leaving the Australian livid as he voiced his frustation over team radio.

Sainz was ultimately handed a five-second time penalty - but Schumacher has asserted it is not enough of a punishment.

“It’s something that makes you furious,” he told Sky Deutschland.

“None of them competed for the points. Then the leader of the race comes, and Sainz drove into his car.

“An absolute no-go from my point of view.  A normal punishment is not enough.

“For me, Carlos Sainz should be punished for the next race. In qualifying at Zandvoort, he has to get one.

“Because otherwise this will set a precedent, it must not happen at all.”

The matter also saw a passionate outburst from Toto Wolff, who criticised “teletubby engineers” for not informing their drivers about lapped cars.

Schumacher asserted it was a dishonourable way to go racing, adding: “Every driver knows what it’s all about.

“You have your engineer, you ask questions and also look in the mirror. If he tells me he can’t look in the mirror when he’s driving, then he’s overwhelmed and has to stop.

“But that’s really unsportsmanlike!”
