Oscar Piastri is anticipating a “fight” for victory after qualifying on the front row for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver narrowly missed out on the fastest lap to team-mate Lando Norris, who scored his third career pole position.

The result marked McLaren's first one-two qualifying result since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.

As the team aims to retain the positions all the way to the chequered flag, Piastri vows he will be “smart“ - but asserts his desire to capture his first career win.

“Of course, I want to get into the lead but we have both cars on the front row,” he said. “We've got a big task ahead of us trying to win this championship as a team and we'll be smart.

“We've got a very quick car. It's been working extremely well this weekend. We want to keep it one-two, we'll fight amongst ourselves over who gets one.”

Having lost the chance to take pole position by just two-hundredths, Piastri remained content with his result amid the challenging conditions and ever-present threat of rain.

“I'm very happy but when I miss out by two-hundredths, you think of all the little things you can do a bit better. But it's an amazing result for the team.

“We had a bit of a tricky day on my side [on Friday] so it was nice to bounce back this morning.

“Obviously this afternoon wasn't easy, a lot of little decisions on the fly. To end up with both cars on the front row, it's an amazing result.”
