Piastri details McLaren damage cause

The rookie lost track time whilst his team changed the floor in FP2.

Oscar Piastri has revealed the reasons for his extended stay in the garage during Hungarian Grand Prix second practice. The McLaren rookie lost 20 minutes of running time during FP2 at the Hungaroring with his mechanics rushing to change the floor on the MCL60. Piastri, who was unlucky to finish off the podium last time out at the British Grand Prix, was able to return to the circuit in the final 10 minutes to complete a mini-long run but wound-up at the bottom of the timing screen, faster than only George Russell. Explaining where he picked up the floor issue, Piastri said: "I went a little bit wide at Turn 11 and did enough damage that we had to change it. "A big effort from all the boys to change the floor and get me back out for a few laps. "Without that, we looked pretty good. I was pretty happy with the first run. The long run at the end - even though it wasn't that long for me - the pace looked promising. "It has not been a bad day. Of course, I would prefer to have done a few more laps but I think we are in a reasonable place."

Pace looked promising

McLaren has pulled off a remarkable turnaround since introducing its latest upgrade package, with Lando Norris taking second and Piastri fourth at Silverstone. Norris was second at the end of the day in Budapest and Piastri described it as "an encouraging day". "In the rain [in FP1], we looked pretty quick and then Lando in P2, put in a pretty good lap on Softs and looked competitive in the long run as well. It was a good day," added Piastri. "It has been not too hot, so we will see how we go. It felt tricky out there with these Soft tyres around here. "The pace looked promising and the laps I actually did looked very comparable, so I think we are in a good place."
