Sergio Perez has provided an explanation for his crash at the end of Q3 in Dutch GP qualifying, which handed Max Verstappen pole position.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen had just pipped Charles Leclerc's time by 0.021s to enjoy provisional pole, but the two Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were yet to complete their second laps.

However, they never got the chance to finish their laps with Perez crashing on the entry to the final, banked corner, bringing out the yellow flags.

"I went in alright, but I just tried to pick up the throttle too early and touched the gravel a little bit," explained Perez who qualified fifth fastest to Sky Sports F1.

"I was on a good lap, but unfortunately I didn't manage to improve.

"It's going to be a tricky one to make some progress early on, but I will try my best. I will try to have strong race pace tomorrow. I think that will be very important.

"We are on a good strategy and we have good options for tomorrow.

"Hopefully we are able to go by [the cars ahead] and have a strong race."
