Oscar Piastri has revealed his surprise at the pace of Ferrari in Austrian Grand Prix qualifying, as he also detailed the "shame" of not getting his final lap.
Placed in P3 after the first runs in Q3, Piastri was unable to open his second lap after Pierre Gasly spun at the final corner, bringing out the yellow flags, with Max Verstappen also affected.
In the end, team-mate Lando Norris blitzed to a third pole of the season, with Charles Leclerc splitting the two McLarens, with Norris enjoying the largest pole margin of the season at over half-a-second.
Reflecting, Piastri felt not having the chance to open his second flying lap was a "shame" on a weekend Norris has dominated.
"It was the fact that I didn't get to start [my second lap] which was the problem," Piastri explained.
"I had Gasly spin at the last corner so I didn't even open my second lap, and Lando has been very quick all weekend, so it would have been a tough challenge [to fight for pole], but we easily had enough pace to be on the front row.
"It is always a shame when you don't get the chance, but we can still have a good race, and sometimes, it is just not your day.
"The pace has looked strong, but the Ferrari pace looked good as well, which was a bit of a surprise, but we've still got some opportunities, and I am not planning on finishing third, that is for sure."
