An irate Oscar Piastri has told Carlos Sainz to "look in the mirror" after their "unacceptable" race-altering collision in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

On Lap 39, Piastri was hit by the lapped Sainz as he battled with Fernando Alonso, with Piastri fighting to maintain the lead from team-mate Lando Norris who had yet to complete second stop.

After cutting across Piastri's bow, the Australian was forced to scoop up the McLaren, losing just enough time to allow Norris to get out ahead.

The collision was ultimately academic after Piastri's gearbox failure, but the McLaren driver was less than impressed at the Williams one - who contended that a systems failure with the blue lapped car warning lights not displaying on his steering wheel was the root cause.

However, Piastri, who unleashed a series of critical messages over the radio, gave that idea short shrift.

"It was the fact that I got crashed into by a lapped car," Piastri said of his frustration over the radio to media, including RacingNews365.

"The timing of the stop was fine, and we covered off Hamilton, which was perfectly normal without getting crashed into, and I would have been ahead of Lando still.

"In the moment, I was incredibly annoyed, in fact annoyed is not the word I would use, there are a multitude I would with Carlos, and then when Lando came out ahead, I knew I had no pace to go and attack him, so my chances of winning were done from there, so in the moment [over the radio], I was pissed off that I'd lost the lead of the race, but that wasn't the fault of the team.

"There are blue flags all over the marshal posts, and I was right behind him for a sector, and I couldn't believe what happened.

"Getting crashed into by a lapped car is never one of the things that you expect can go wrong in your race, and I don't really care if he didn't see him.

"The fact he didn't, and no-one told him, or there was a complete lack of awareness, is unacceptable.

"I mean, he was fighting Fernando for last place like it was the world championship, and it cost me the lead of the race.

"He is quite critical of others, and others have given him some stick for being frustrating on track, and when you go and do something like that, I think you should maybe look in the mirror."
