Oscar Piastri has received a staggering amount of support from Formula 1 fans, who unanimously disagree with the McLaren driver's São Paulo Grand Prix penalty.
The Australian received a race-changing 10-second time penalty for being judged at fault for causing a collision with Kimi Antonelli and Charles Leclerc.
Following a safety car restart on lap six, Piastri dived to the inside of Antonelli at the first corner in an attempt to gain second place. At the same moment, Leclerc went to the outside of Antonelli, also in pursuit of the position.
As the trio entered the corner, Antonelli squeezed Piastri which resulted in a lock-up for the former championship leader, who made contact with the Mercedes driver as a result.
The collision between Piastri and Antonelli triggered an additional incident, as the latter then went into the side of Leclerc's Ferrari.
Leclerc was the biggest loser from the incident as he was forced to retire from the race, while Antonelli recovered to finish in second.
In Piastri's case, he was the driver of the three penalised due to the stewards believing that he was "wholly responsible" for the accident.
In a RacingNews365 poll created after the clash, an overwhelming majority of 68.86% believe the penalty was unfair and that Antonelli could have done more to have avoided the collision, an opinion also shared by Leclerc.
On the other hand, 31.14% of voters believe Piastri's punishment was fair, which saw him finish in fifth rather than second.
Regardless of whether Piastri deserved the penalty or not, it has had a huge impact on the drivers' title fight. Piastri has fallen 24 points adrift of Lando Norris due to finishing fifth, a gap which would sit at 16 points if no penalty was awarded.
