Oscar Piastri has stated that he will “build some oars” in anticipation of a Sunday washout at the Miami Grand Prix.
Extremely wet conditions are forecast for race day in Miami, which could cause disruptions and changes to the schedule.
The entirety of the season so far has been held in dry conditions, with many unknowns surrounding the performance of the challengers on a saturated track.
Piastri is due to take the start of the race from seventh on the grid after a challenging qualifying outing.
When asked by Sky F1 what it will take for him to return to the top step of the podium on Sunday, Piastri replied: “I think probably build some oars.”
“We'll see what we get. If it's wet, that's going to throw in a lot of spanners in the works.
“No one has really driven these cars in the rain and no one really knows what they're going to do.
“Hopefully we're on the right side of that.”
While no weekend session has been held in wet conditions this year, Pirelli's wet tyre test programme earlier this year saw some of McLaren's rivals set up and take part.
Explaining the difficulties that he is expecting to run into in wet conditions, Piastri added to media including RacingNews365: “It's going to be tough.
“In terms of driving the car, it's not going to be that different to what we had before.
“It's just going to be what happens with the power unit, how you get power, where you get power, it's in a computer's hands.
“It's just making sure that that does roughly what we expect. Obviously, the margin for error when it's wet is significantly low.”
