Oscar Piastri has insists he is in F1 to "win championships" and not obtain records, as he is on the cusp of breaking an all-time Australian benchmark.

Piastri is currently the championship leader, having won five of the nine grands prix thus far in 2025, and leads team-mate Lando Norris by 10 points heading into the Canadian Grand Prix.

No Australian driver has ever won more than five races in a season, with Piastri having 15 more opportunities to break the record he currently holds with Sir Jack Brabham and Alan Jones, who achieved a quintet of wins in 1960 and 1980, respectively.

Brabham and Jones both won the drivers' championship in those respective seasons, with five wins, as Piastri vowed to ensure he is crowned the third Australian world champion.

"It is a nice stat to have, I'd be happier with the status of joining them as a world champion, but it has been a great start," Piastri told media including RacingNews365 when presented with the stat of Brabham and Jones.

"To have five wins in nine races is beyond what I expected, even with a competitive car, but there have been a few moments I wish I could have again in the season, but on the whole, I am proud of the work I and the team have put in to achieve these kind of things.

"Whilst those stats are cool, it is not why I am here. I am here to try and win even more races and fight for a championship, so hopefully there are some cooler statistics to come.

"This weekend should be a good one for me. I've worked on a lot of things from last year, and this race was probably a good one already, but somewhat ironically, the races which were bad last year have probably been the best so far this year.

"And some of the races that were good last year haven't been great, so we will see how we go, but I am expecting a good weekend.

"It is a track I enjoy, and it is very difficult to drive around here and not make mistakes, but I've been very comfortable with the car the whole year and feel like I am in a good place at the moment, so expect to be strong."

As the table below shows. Piastri's next victory in F1 will draw him level with Daniel Ricciardo's eight grand prix wins, and take him one behind manager Mark Webber's nine.

Most grand prix wins by Australian drivers

Driver Number of wins Most wins in a season
Sir Jack Brabham 14 5 - 1960
Alan Jones 12 5 - 1980
Mark Webber 9 4- 2010
Daniel Ricciardo 8 3 - 2014
Oscar Piastri 7 5 - 2025
