In 1949, the FIM set up an official world championship with several classes in which world titles could be won. These classes included the 125cc, 250cc, 350cc, 500cc and sidecar classes.

Moto2, breeding ground for MotoGP

The 250cc class was part of the road racing world championship from 1949 until 2009. In 2010, the 250cc class was replaced by Moto2 as part of a series of changes aimed at narrowing the gap between MotoGP and the underlying classes. Moto2 now acts as a direct step-up class to MotoGP.

Moto2 engines

In the Moto2 class, all teams have identical equipment. From the 2018-2019 season, all motorbikes are powered by a three-cylinder four-stroke Triumph engine with a displacement of 765cc, delivering 136 hp (100 kW).

Moto2 riders

Given that Moto2 is the second-highest motorbike sport class in the world, it is only natural that big names from MotoGP were allowed to showcase their talent within this championship. Examples include Francesco Bagnaia, Jorge Lorenzo, Max Biaggi, Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi.
