Mercedes has unveiled the brand-new F1 safety car, which will be used for the first time at this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ is to be deployed as the 14th official safety car as Mercedes-Benz celebrates 30 years of providing the machine to F1 for use as the vehicle.
It is the first-ever safety car equipped with variable all-wheel drive, with the biturbo 4.0-litre V8 producing 612bhp and a maximum torque of 850nm. It is capable of producing 450 kW.
The new safety car features refined "highly efficient aerodynamics" including a new front splitter, a modified rear wing with active flap and front dive planes to improve stability in high-speed corners and to generate increased downforce over the front axle.
It is also equipped with "advanced FIA-specific systems," including radio, GPS, camera technology and the centre console, whilst also being fitted with a roll cage, six-point safety harness and racing bucket seats. It will run on "ultra-high performance" Pirelli P Zero tyres.
"The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+, as the Official FIA F1 Safety Car, combines the highest levels of safety with impressive sportiness and driving pleasure," said safety car driver Bernd Maylander.
"Its agile and direct response to driver inputs is spot on. It is the first safety car with all-wheel drive. This provides optimum traction, which is particularly noticeable when combined with all the other technical features.
"It really comes into its own when cornering and accelerating. It is an exceptional road car. I am now looking forward to driving the new safety car for the first time under real-world conditions in Hungary."
