Mercedes raise theory over McLaren boost: 'Clearly more to it'

Mercedes has pointed to McLaren's strong form at the Hungarian Grand Prix, suggesting there was “more to it” than its upgrade package.

The Woking-based squad introduced fresh parts last time out in Budapest in an effort to join the fight at the front of the field, which has largely been led by Mercedes.

Lando Norris sealed pole position before clinching McLaren's first win of the campaign last Sunday, marking the third non-Mercedes victory of the year.

While Mercedes expressed that the new parts clearly marked a step forward for McLaren, it indicated that Norris' personal performance also played a part.

“The update package was certainly significant, and it must have contributed to their performance,” Mercedes deputy technical director Simone Resta told the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show.

“At the same time, if you look at the gap between their two cars, there was clearly more to it than the upgrade alone. 

“Throughout the year we've seen McLaren perform very strongly, with the balance of performance between their two drivers varying from race to race.

“We've also seen strong performances from Lando several times this season. 

“Budapest may simply have been one of those weekends where he found himself in a particularly good place with the car, the setup and tyre management.”

“I think it was probably a combination of both factors.”

Mercedes' advantage at the head of the pecking order appears to have dwindled in recent events, however it still holds a healthy advantage atop both championships.

Resta hailed the impact both its drivers have had on the team's form as it targets another title success this year.

“We are fortunate to have a very strong driver pairing ourselves. George and Kimi are both incredibly quick. Both have taken pole positions this year and both have won races. 

“Across different weekends and different circumstances, they have each delivered outstanding performances for the team. That is a tremendous asset. 

“The competition between them continually raises the standard, and ultimately that allows the team to achieve better results.
