Mercedes facing F1 penalty dilemma as key decision looms

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stated the team is mulling over whether or not it opts to take strategic power unit-related grid penalties this year.

Every driver has a penalty-free allocation of power unit components they can use each season, with any spillover resulting in automatic grid drops.

Teams often target races that present high overtaking opportunities to introduce extra components in order to limit the damage.

Both Mercedes drivers are gunning for the title and sit on the verge of using components that will result in a penalty; however, they are free to revert to older parts that are already in the pool.

But should it decide to introduce a fresh power unit, Wolff has suggested that Monza could be an option for the team, given its high-speed nature and ample overtaking zones.

“In terms of engine penalties, I still very much hope we don't need to take it,” Wolff told media including RacingNews365.

“We need to decide when that is, when we need to take one, and which tracks? 

“There could be one [Monza] that can be very special for Kimi [Antonelli] , but on paper it look like it's a good place to take an engine penalty.”

However, Wolff is wary that such a decision may not be well-received in Antonelli's camp.

“So I need to speak to Marco [Antonelli's father] whether we want to take an engine penalty at Monza,” he laughed.

“You take the pressure off at Monza starting from the back.”

Mercedes has suffered various reliability concerns this year, with both Antonelli and team-mate George Russell victims of its issues.

Wolff admitted the lingering concerns will likely play a factor in its final decision.

“Just our reliability has just not been good,” he said. “Whether we take a penalty or not, we shall see.”
