Mercedes begin F1 campaign with engine problems

It looks as though Mercedes have a further challenge in their bid to catch Red Bull on Sunday with Toto Wolff admitting the team are having some issues when it comes to their engine.

Mercedes are playing catch up at the Bahrain Grand Prix with Red Bull the team to beat and Toto Wolff admitting that the Silver Arrows are being hampered by some engine problems. Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas start second and third respectively in Bahrain behind Verstappen, who claimed an impressive pole position. While the result seems to indicate it isn't all doom and gloom at Mercedes following some problems during testing, there are still some issues to work out. “I think we're losing on the high speed [corners]," Wolff told RacingNews365.com and other members of the media. "We can clearly see there's a deficit. “We're losing a little bit on the engine side in terms of derate. We are not yet in a happy place with our energy recovery, but it's not one thing where we can point to and say this is the big gap.” Mercedes' engine problems come as Honda have impressed with Red Bull and AlphaTauri, though Wolff isn't overly concerned about the issue. “Honda has done a great job,” Wolff said. “They delivered the power unit which is extremely competitive. Look at where AlphaTauri is, we just have to take it as sportsmen. “You just have to say when they've done a really good job, full stop. There's just no one-off solution then to recover. And I believe that on the derates that you see, it is something that we have to get on top of. That is not easy, but we'll get there.”
