Mercedes and Red Bull reach off-season agreement

F1 rivals Mercedes and Red Bull have reached an agreement for Ben Hodgkinson to make the move to Red Bull Powertrains in 2022.

Ben Hodgkinson will be free to join Red Bull Powertrains later this year after Mercedes and Red Bull reached an agreement during the build-up to the 2022 F1 season. In a move that was announced back in April of 2021, Hodgkinson is making the switch from Head of Mechanical Engineering at Mercedes HPP to Technical Director at Red Bull's equivalent department. After discussions between the two teams, it has been agreed that Hodgkinson can start work at Red Bull Powertrains from 24 May – just after the Spanish Grand Prix.

Mercedes and Red Bull reach an agreement

"Mercedes F1 and Red Bull F1 today reached an agreement regarding the appointment of Ben Hodgkinson," read a joint statement. "Under the terms of that agreement, Ben, who joined Mercedes in August 2001, will be free to join Red Bull Powertrains from 24 May 2022." Red Bull are taking on the running of Honda's power units from 2022 as F1 introduces a freeze on development in this area for three years.
