Formula E to race full F1 Mexico City layout as Gen4 arrives

Formula E will use the complete Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit for the Mexico City E-Prix, adopting the same layout used by Formula 1 rather than the shortened track the series has raced on previously. 

The revised layout was published after tickets went on general sale for the event, which forms round three of the 2026/27 season, scheduled for 16 January 2027.

The change marks a significant departure from Formula E's previous Mexico City configuration, a roughly 2.6-kilometre track that cut into the infield early and looped back out of the Foro Sol stadium section before rejoining the circuit. 

The new layout stretches to the full 4.3-kilometre Grand Prix distance, running the entire length of the main straight, through the sweeping middle Esses, and directly through the stadium section before exiting onto the final part of the Peraltada corner.

While the full layout will be used, tickets have only been released for the Foro Sol stadium, the final corner and the start/finish straight.

One Formula E twist remains as Mexico City modification added

Crucially, the series will tackle the Foro Sol stadium section in identical fashion to F1, sending cars through the tight, technical sequence carved into the old baseball venue. 

The section is notoriously demanding even for F1 cars, with Mexico City's 2,200-metre altitude reducing aerodynamic downforce and leaving cars prone to sliding through the slow direction changes inside the stadium. 

One addition for the E-Prix will be a chicane on the start-finish straight, inserted to create a dedicated heavy braking zone for energy regeneration. 

This chicane will sit at the point where the circuit used to cut into the infield in previous years.

The switch to a full permanent circuit layout is tied directly to Gen4, Formula E's new fourth-generation car making its debut this season. 

The car brings 450 kW of race power, a 600 kW attack mode peak, permanent all-wheel drive, and a larger 55 kWh battery, changes that reportedly demand longer, faster circuits capable of sustaining higher energy recovery over extended lap distances.

It is expected that the full Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit will also be used for its first time hosting Formula E in May next year, while the full Zandvoort layout will not be used.

Based on titles used in recent social media activity by Formula E, these events will likely be known as the British E-Prix and the Dutch E-Prix, in another uncommon move by the championship.
