McLaren F1 news

Following a turbulent few years under the turbo-hybrid engine rules, McLaren have begun to make a comeback on the track in the past three seasons, with their third place finish in the 2020 Constructors' Championship becoming the team's best result since 2012.

Based in Woking, the Formula 1 cars of the team are built in the modern McLaren Technology Centre. Under the leadership of CEO Zak Brown and Team Principal Andreas Stella, the team is aiming for the next step towards the top. Compared to 2022, much has changed within the team. Stella took over from Andreas Seidl, who left for Sauber/Alfa Romeo, and the promising rookie Oscar Piastri replaced the underperforming Daniel Ricciardo.

The 2023 season started slowly, but as the season progressed, the team developed exceptionally well, allowing them to score more and more points. This trend continued into 2024, resulting in the team winning the Constructors' Championship for the first time since 1998.

Legendary drivers for McLaren including Senna

McLaren are one of the names to become most closely associated with the sport of Formula 1. The second-oldest team on the grid have housed legendary drivers, from Ayrton Senna and Niki Lauda to Alain Prost. McLaren have achieved eight Constructors' Championships and 12 Drivers' Championships since the team was founded by New Zealand-born Bruce McLaren back in 1963.

Despite securing their first F1 win at the Belgian Grand Prix of 1968, McLaren would have to wait until 1974 for their first Constructors' and Drivers' Championships, with Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi winning the first followed by Briton James Hunt in 1976, the latter of which was chronicled in the 2013 film Rush.

The team found further success in the 1980s during the early years of Ron Dennis' stint as CEO, and reached their peak with the signing of Ayrton Senna, as the company also switched to Honda engines in a move that saw them win four back-to-back titles between 1988 and 1991.
 

Senna formed a tumultuous partnership with Alain Prost throughout this period, with the rivalry descending into chaotic racing between the two at times. Despite the tension, McLaren managed to win all but one race in the 1988 season on their way to a dominant victory

That success would wane in the early 1990s, as domestic rivals Williams made their mark on the championship. However, McLaren moved back towards the front with Mika Hakkinen at the wheel combined with Mercedes power in the late 1990s. This helped them to collecr two Drivers' titles in this period.

Lewis Hamilton's first championship

Despite challenging for race victories and titles in the 2000s and early 2010s - with a highlight being Lewis Hamilton's debut championship win with the team in 2008 - McLaren found themselves slipping backwards in the mid 2010s. A reunion with Honda did not yield results, leading the team to switch to Renault power.

When Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz became the new driver line-up in 2019, things started to look more positive for the outfit, and this continued into 2020, where they took third in the Constructors' Championship.
 

Sainz moved to Ferrari for 2021, with Daniel Ricciardo then joining as his replacement. The team also switched to Mercedes engines. Norris had his strongest season yet, and outperformed the more experienced Ricciardo for most of the campaign. The highlight of the year came at the Italian Grand Prix, where Ricciardo led the squad to a 1-2 finish.

With the car eventually becoming one of the leading midfield cars in 2022, the team were let down by a lack of points from Ricciardo in 2022, losing out to Alpine for P4 in the Constructors' rankings. McLaren will be keen to fight back in 2023, with Oscar Piastri joining Lando Norris the team.

McLaren made significant strides from 2023 to 2024

After a disappointing start to the 2023 season, the team looked set for a challenging year and was in danger of finishing at the bottom of the Constructors' Championship. However, the Papaya team made a remarkable comeback from the British Grand Prix onwards, consistently securing high positions in every race. These impressive performances ultimately resulted in McLaren finishing fourth in the Constructors' Championship.

Due to the numerous podium finishes achieved by McLaren since the British Grand Prix, the team was considered a serious contender for the title in the 2024 season, with Red Bull as its main rival.

At the start of the season, Red Bull appeared to dominate the season, but throughout the season, the McLaren team continued to improve, ultimately winning the Constructors' Championship. Lando Norris was also able to challenge the title favorite for the World Championship but narrowly missed out on victory against the Dutchman. Many see the Briton as one of the favorites for the Drivers' Championship in 2025.
