McLaren CEO Zak Brown has admitted he would like to reunite with Fernando Alonso at the Indianapolis 500 in the future.
Alonso first linked up with McLaren in 2007, but a painful season alongside rookie Lewis Hamilton saw him depart at the end of the year.
The Spaniard struck a deal with the team again in 2015 when McLaren partnered Honda, but a handful of lacklustre campaigns brought Alonso little on-track success.
However, Alonso was granted permission to skip the Monaco Grand Prix in 2017 in favour of an outing at the Indianapolis 500 in a joint entry between McLaren, Andretti and Honda.
He was in contention for the victory before an engine failure ruled him out and returned to the race in 2019, when he was dramatically bumped out of qualifying.
Alonso does not have an F1 contract with Aston Martin beyond the current season as Brown spies up a chance to go racing with the two-time champion once again.
“This is his last contractual year, it doesn’t mean he won't continue [in F1],” Brown said.
“But I talk to him about it [the Indy 500] every time I see him.
“I think we've got a car that can win the Indy 500. I think he's very capable of winning the Indy 500.”
Should Alonso triumph at the Indy 500, he would become only the second driver in history to win the 'Triple Crown'.
Alonso has not given any solid indication he would like to return to Indianapolis - but the 44-year-old has an open invite from McLaren should he wish to do so.
“I thoroughly enjoyed racing with him here, he enjoyed it all but one of the years,” he said.
“He loved the first year, it was magic. I'd love to see Fernando back at the Indy 500 with us, and that is something I'll continue to bug him about.”
