McLaren unveil throwback livery for British Grand Prix

The Woking-based outfit has teamed up with title partner Google for a hark back to a look that saw Lewis Hamilton clinch his maiden F1 World Championship.

McLaren has unveiled a special chrome livery ahead of the British Grand Prix, alongside title partner Google. The design, which harks back to the livery used between 2006 and 2014 and took in race victories for Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Heikki Kovalainen and Jenson Button, has returned in form as part of McLaren's 60th-anniversary celebrations. Hamilton's title-winning season in 2008 coincided with the launch of Google's Chrome browser, which is now used across the board by McLaren as part of its F1 operations. Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will race the design at Silverstone this weekend, with both drivers adorning special race suits and the former also wearing special boots and a new crash helmet design. The design follows the triple-crown livery used in Monaco and Spain, which allowed fans to reminisce over McLaren's victories in the Principality, the Indy 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Classic Chrome

“It’s no secret that racing fans love McLaren’s classic chrome livery," said McLaren CEO Zak Brown. "Google Chrome wanted to bring back elements of this iconic livery to celebrate our team’s history at the British Grand Prix, and we’re excited to be able to give our fans what they want. “I’m sure this livery will bring back great memories for many of our fans, and I can’t wait to see it out on track at our home race.” Google VP, Global Marketing Nick Drake added: “It’s been a privilege for the Google Chrome team to work with McLaren on bringing back elements of an iconic livery to inspire this takeover. "We were delighted with the fans’ reaction to the branded wheel covers that introduced our partnership, and now Google Chrome is putting chrome back on the McLaren for its home race. "We’re looking forward to Silverstone and hope all McLaren fans enjoy what promises to be a really exciting weekend of racing.”
