McLaren bracing for fierce F1 midfield battle

Now powered by Mercedes and with Daniel Ricciardo amongst the ranks, McLaren will look to build on their standout 2020 campaign. However team boss Andreas Seidl knows it won't be easy to replicate the feat in 2021.

Although McLaren took a big step forward in 2020, team boss Andreas Seidl isn't expecting things to be any easier for them when the lights turn green this season. The Woking outfit finished third in the constructors' standings last campaign as the team continue their climb back up the grid. With Daniel Ricciardo now partnering Lando Norris, McLaren will look to replicate that feat, though Seidl knows the rest of the midfield won't sit back without a fight. "I think we will be in the same fight as last year," Seidl told RacingNews365 , and other members of the press. "I expect a fight between Aston Martin, Alpine, Ferrari and us and AlphaTauri also looked strong. But we have to wait until the first race weekend, I think everything is close together again. "It was great that we finished third last year, but at the same time we shouldn't forget the last race because we could have easily finished fifth." McLaren will be powered by Mercedes this season, and while things have looked good so far, Seidl knows there may be hiccups along the way. "We must not forget that in two weeks' time we will have to do a lot of things for the first time with our new engine partner Mercedes, both in qualifying and the race," Seidl concluded.
