Max Verstappen clinched pole position for the sprint at the Singapore Grand Prix, besting George Russell by just over a tenth of a second under the lights of the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Charles Leclerc rounded out the top three, ahead of the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Verstappen's pole is, however, at risk. The Red Bull driver is under investigation for an alleged yellow flag infringement during SQ1.
Lewis Hamilton, whom the Dutchman passed on track under those conditions, reported his old foe over team radio, with the stewards opting for a closer look after the session.
There were two notable delays to proceedings. First, Sergio Perez crashed during SQ1, which ultimately culminated in the red flag coming out after his limping Cadillac left debris strewn across the track surface.
Secondly, problems with the F1 timing system during the same segment confused the order. Although who survived and who was eliminated was eventually corrected, there was a pause to ensure the issue was fixed, meaning SQ2 started only a few minutes before SQ3 was scheduled to end.
Verstappen overcame an ERS issue before the sprint qualifying, with Red Bull making precautionary changes to his RB22.

Sprint Qualifying 3
The times came tumbling down when the eight minutes of SQ3 got going. Instantly, Norris went one second quicker than in SQ2, underlining the rapid rates of track evolution at F1's original night race.
Leclerc, Russell and the McLarens looked to be in the hunt for pole, but it was Verstappen who would prevail.
The 29-year-old, who was late out with work being undertaken on his car, eventually set a pole time of 1:31.156, which was 1.6 seconds quicker than his own SQ2 time.
TOP 10: P1 - Max Verstappen; P2 - George Russell; P3 - Charles Leclerc; P4 - Oscar Piastri; P5 - Lando Norris; P6 - Lewis Hamilton; P7 - Kimi Antonelli; P8 - Liam Lawson; P9 - Isack Hadjar; P10 - Pierre Gasly
Sprint Qualifying 2
After a short delay due to problems with the timing system, SQ2 got underway, with the Ferrari duo of Leclerc and Hamilton setting the early pace.
Russell struggled in his Mercedes, sitting down in eighth and having to bail out of his second effort after locking his tyres.
The British driver managed to survive with his final run, however, vaulting out of the danger zone to fourth-quickest in the middle segment.
Despite that late scare for the Mercedes driver, there were no surprise eliminations from SQ2.
Verstappen was keen to point out potentially being impeded by Hamilton during his last effort, as the two old adversaries continued to fight it out on track.
OUT IN SQ2: P11 - Franco Colapinto; P12 - Nico Hulkenberg; P13 - Oliver Bearman; P14 - Gabriel Bortoleto; P15 - Fernando Alonso; P16 -
Sprint Qualifying 1
The opening 12-minute session saw most cars immediately file out onto the circuit, but just before the halfway mark, Sergio Perez's crash at Turn 4 triggered the first red flag of the weekend.
Initially, the incident brought out yellow flags, but as he attempted to drag his ailing Cadillac back to the pits, he left debris strewn all over the track.
That left numerous drivers, including the Red Bulls and McLarens, without a time on the board, and the prospect of a high-intensity, compressed end to SQ1.
Verstappen was noted for a potential yellow flag infringement, having passed Hamilton on track. The Ferrari driver was quick to flag it to his team, whilst the Dutchman radioed Red Bull to attempt to defend his case.
The four-time F1 drivers' champion will be investigated after the conclusion of sprint qualifying. The stewards, meanwhile, declined to further look into Perez for potentially driving his car in an unsafe condition.
Once the segment resumed, it was fairly business as usual, with no shock exits to report. However, the issues with the F1 timing tower meant it was initially unclear that Gabriel Bortoleto survived at the expense of Arvid Lindblad.
OUT IN SQ1: P17 - Arvid Lindblad; P18 - Lance Stroll; P19 - Alex Albon; P20 - Sergio Perez; P21 - Valtteri Bottas; P22 - Carlos Sainz
