Max Verstappen has ruled out signing an immediate contract extension, insisting that he first wants to decide whether he even wishes to continue beyond his current deal.
The four-time world champion is currently contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028 but has hinted that he could leave F1 at the end of the season if changes to the regulations are not made.
Verstappen has been a vocal critic of the new power unit regulations, which feature a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power.
Following his podium finish in Montreal, the Dutchman insisted that, unless F1 moved to at least a 60/40 split from next season, he would leave the championship.
On media day ahead of this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix, Verstappen praised the work the FIA is doing to implement changes but ruled out signing a new contract anytime soon.
"I haven't signed a new contract for a while, but that's not the biggest concern for me right now either," Verstappen told select media including RacingNews365.
"I still have two years [on my contract]."
Contracts were a talking point at the Circuit de Monaco following Charles Leclerc putting pen to paper on a new Ferrari deal.
It raised the question of whether Red Bull would be eager for Verstappen to follow suit, although he stressed that he is in no rush to commit beyond 2028.
Asked if Red Bull would prefer him to sign a new deal now, Verstappen explained: "I first have to decide for myself whether I also want to continue a bit longer than 2028.
"That's why I'm not in a hurry. Otherwise I would have long since signed my contract until 2040!"
