Max Verstappen has labelled British media as “very childish” after taking issue with a press conference question after qualifying in Canada.

The primary discussion surrounding Verstappen on the build-up to the Canadian Grand Prix has been focused on his penalty point tally following his clash with George Russell in Spain two weeks ago.

Verstappen is just one point away from being issued a race ban and does not lose points on his super licence until the end of the Austrian round later this month.

After qualifying in second place in Montreal, press conference host Tom Clarkson began to ask Verstappen about his penalty point predicament, prompting a stern response from the four-time champion.

Speaking to select media including RacingNews365, Verstappen stated when asked how he finds experiences such as press conferences: “A waste of time.

"It's just childish. Like I said, it's a waste of time. I really don't have anything to do with that at all.

“They probably don't have anything better to ask, I don't know. I'm not going to say too much about it either, but.... it's just very irritating and I'm not here for that.

“This is definitely not fun and that's why I'm counting down how long the press conference is. I want to watch Le Mans.”

Following his run to pole position on Saturday, Russell highlighted he had “more points on my license to play with” as he looked ahead to Sunday's head-to-head fight against Verstappen.

When asked if Russell's words play a role in his frustration, Verstappen denied it is the case as he pointed to his irritation with the British press.

“None of that matters to me,” he said. “I'm just here to give a performance and do the best for the team. And then I'm going home again.

“This kind of comment from the British media is just very childish. I just don't want to waste too much time on it.”
