Max Verstappen has been branded a "T. rex" by Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft in a humorous Jurassic Park metaphor.

The Dutchman clinched pole position for the United States Grand Prix sprint, ahead of the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, as he continues to muscle his way back into the F1 drivers' championship fight.

Despite falling to 104 points behind Piastri after the Dutch Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver has clawed his way back into — albeit distant — contention.

Following the Singapore Grand Prix, where he finished second, but crucially, ahead of both McLarens, Verstappen trails the Australian by 63 points.

Then he went and put it on pole for the one-third distance race at the Circuit of the Americas.

Croft was joined in the commentary box by former F1 driver Martin Brundle, who aptly summed up another sublime Verstappen performance.

The nine-time podium finisher exclaimed: "He's done it again, hasn't he. He's done it again."

Croft, however, could not resist leaning on a scene from the cult classic film Jurassic Park to illustrate the precarious position Piastri and Norris now find themselves in.

The pair had, at one stage, been embroiled in what was strictly an intra-team title fight. However, the looming threat of Verstappen has returned and is becoming increasingly close to being realised.

"I keep getting reminded of that scene in Jurassic Park, two people sat in a Jeep, trying to escape the dinosaurs, and there's a T. rex charging after them," the Briton said.

"And there's your T. rex, ladies and gentlemen [as the broadcast showed Verstappen decamping his RB21], and Lando and Oscar are in the Jeep."
