Felipe Massa has reiterated his desire to see the results of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix investigated. Since the infamous 'crashgate' scandal – when Nelson Piquet Jr deliberately crashed to help then-Renault teammate Fernando Alonso win the race – came to light in 2009, Massa has blamed the event for losing him the 2008 World Championship title by one point to Lewis Hamilton. The crash, and subsequent Safety Car period, triggered a botched pit stop for race leader Massa, who went on finish outside the points, with Hamilton finishing third. With details of the event coming to light long after the conclusion of the 2008 season, there had previously been no hope of contesting the results. However, Bernie Ecclestone conceded in March that both he and former FIA President Max Mosley knew about the incident in 2008 , and intentionally kept it a secret to "protect the sport", knowing that an investigation in 2008 would have affected the outcome of the title race.
Massa: Were Singapore events correct or not?
Massa is understood to have assembled a team of lawyers to investigate the case, and said on Thursday that he was simply trying to ascertain whether the events surrounding the Singapore race had been conducted correctly. "I didn't wake up this year and say I was looking for that result in 2008 [to be overturned]. I didn't do that," Massa told Sky F1 . "But we saw some interesting interviews from Bernie [Ecclestone], also from Charlie Whiting, from Max Mosley, and after that, I thought that what happened in the end was not correct, so I'm looking forward to understanding everything that happened. "I fought until the last lap, the last moment, I won the [2008 season's final] race in Brazil. But maybe something that happened in that race in Singapore was not correct for the sport, for justice. "It's about understanding if what went on was correct or not."
