Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has issued a positive update regarding the potential of the RB21 car against McLaren.

Verstappen ended qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix in fourth place while Oscar Piastri bagged his maiden pole position for McLaren.

The gap between the duo was two-tenths of a second, while Verstappen also lost out to Piastri in the sprint race.

The Australian completed a late race overtake on Verstappen to claim the runner-up spot. Although Verstappen was beaten by Piastri in both sessions, Marko is encouraged by the gap to McLaren.

“It is so close together," Marko told to Viaplay

“The difference with McLaren is much smaller than thought, about a tenth.

“If we can keep our tyre wear under control, it will be a battle with McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari. About six drivers can fight for the win.”

The condition of the tyres was a major factor during the sprint race, with Verstappen suffering for pace in the final laps of the event.

Although his pain during the shorter race was evident, Marko asserted the situation has improved substantially since Friday's practice session.

"In the first free practice it was much worse, so we have already improved,” Marko said.

“It did show up with us earlier than with the competition. It's a problem on this track anyway, but hopefully our adjustments are working.”
