The FIA has approved the technical regulations for Gen4 of Formula E, to be introduced at the end of next year for Season 13.
FE's next set of technical regulations was approved by the FIA during Tuesday's meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Macau, as well as its calendar for Season 12.
Whilst renders of the Gen4 are yet to be released, testing of FE's newest car has been privately undertaken by James Rossiter, former F1 test driver for several teams – he also previously raced for Peugeot in WEC.
In approving FE's technical regulations for Gen4, details of the yet-to-be-unveiled package have been released, in what is the biggest technological step in the championship's history.
The Gen4 will feature two different aerodynamic configurations with high and low downforce, whilst it will feature permanent four-wheel drive.
Four-wheel drive is temporarily available in the current Gen3 Evo, but only whilst the car is in its 350kW power output mode.
On the topic of power output, Gen4 will see the power output increase from 350kW to 600kW, the equivalent of 800 bhp. In addition, its regeneration capability will increase from 600kW to 700kW.
Bridgestone will become FE's tyre supplier in Gen4, taking over from Hankook. Current simulations of Gen4's performance is suggesting that it will be as quick if not quicker than Formula 2, particularly at the Circuit de Monaco.
In a recent episode of the RacingNews365 Podcast, Envision's Sebastien Buemi revealed: "Gen4 will be about ultimate performance. It's really about making sure and being able to say, 'Okay, we have the range, but we have a fast car', a car that, in Monaco, is going to be, apparently, a lot faster than an F2 car.
"It's really going to be quite close to the 2026 F1 [cars]. And, yeah, I can't wait to see that car. It's a bigger car, it's a longer car, but it's going to be a much faster car."
He later added: "What I've heard is between 1m 15 and 1m 18 [laps] in Monaco, which, obviously, it's clearly a lot faster than F2."
