Mahindra makes Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara decision as Formula E driver pairing confirmed

Mahindra has confirmed that Edoardo Mortara and Nyck de Vries will remain with the team for the 2026/27 Formula E season.

The campaign marks the start of a new era for the series, with Formula E introducing its fourth-generation car, the Gen4, billed as the fastest machine in the championship's history.

Mortara and de Vries have driven for Mahindra since 2023, and together have taken two victories, 10 further podium finishes and six pole positions across their time with the team.

Their form last season helped the team to a record-equalling result, with Mahindra matching its best-ever finish of third in the teams' championship and scoring a record 252 points, its highest single-season tally to date.

The pairing will now lead the team into the Gen4 era, giving Mahindra continuity alongside proven race-winning experience as it aims to push further towards the front of the grid.

For Mortara, it will be a 10th season in Formula E, and the Swiss-Italian will have raced across all four generations of the championship by the time Gen4 makes its debut. He has six victories and 18 podium finishes in the category, finished runner-up in Season 7, fought for the title deep into the Season 8 finale, and remained in mathematical contention entering the Season 12 finale.

De Vries, meanwhile, enters his seventh season in the championship having made his debut after winning the 2019 Formula 2 title. 

The Dutchman won the Formula E drivers' championship in just his second season, and has 15 podium finishes and six career wins to his name, two of which came last season as part of Mahindra's record campaign.

With both drivers now starting their fourth season together at the team, the deal gives Mahindra a settled base heading into Formula E's next chapter.

Why Mahindra opted for continuity over fresh faces

Mahindra CEO and team principal Frederic Bertrand explained the thinking behind retaining the duo.

"I would like to thank Nyck and Edoardo for continuing this adventure with us as we begin its second chapter," said Bertrand. "Over the past three seasons, we have built trust, shared reference points and a strong way of working together. That continuity will be important as Formula E enters the Gen4 era.

"Gen4 will bring an even greater challenge, and Season 13 will demand a steep learning curve from the whole team. We have a strong foundation, but there is still a great deal to discover about the new car. Our priority will be to learn quickly, work through the details and improve step by step."

For Mortara, the veteran will turn 40 ahead of the third round of the new season in Mexico City, with Lucas di Grassi's retirement making him the oldest driver on the grid. 

It is a title which will not bother him, with Mortara pleased to extend his stay with Mahindra into a new era.

"I'm really happy to continue with the team," expressed Mortara. "Our collaboration over the past three seasons has been very positive, with results steadily improving along the way. 

"Together, we've lifted our performance at every level, and I'm proud of what we've built. Entering my tenth Formula E season, we know the year ahead will be a real challenge, especially on the technical side, with so much that is new. I'm curious and excited to take on that challenge with the team as we move to the new Gen4 cars."

The most recent season was comfortably de Vries' best since returning to the championship after his dire spell in Formula 1 with AlphaTauri. 

He was consistently one of the quickest drivers, and had it not been for a few incidents, would have been a real title contender. Based on the expected driving-style similarities between the Gen4 and F2, de Vries could be a driver to absolutely watch.

"The past three years with Mahindra have been a very rewarding journey," began de Vries. "We've made a lot of progress together, and finishing third in the teams' championship last season was a great reward for all the hard work everyone across the team has put in. I'm very proud of what we've achieved together and the direction we've been moving in.

"I'm very happy to continue with Mahindra as we enter the Gen4 era. It represents a completely new challenge for everyone in Formula E, with a lot to learn and discover. I'm excited to take that on with the team and see where this next chapter takes us."
