Kevin Magnussen admits that he finds it "strange" to have been shown the black and orange flag twice in recent times, despite not having seen it before in his F1 career. The flag – which is used to indicate that a driver has a mechanical issue and must return to the pits for it to be resolved – was brought out for Magnussen during the Hungarian Grand Prix after he made contact with the McLaren of Daniel Ricciardo at Turn 1. This meant that Magnussen was forced to make a pit-stop on Lap 5, which dropped him to the back of the field. After struggling with the Hard tyres following the stop, the Haas driver swapped to the Mediums before having the Softs fitted for his final stint. He eventually finished the race in P16.
Magnussen baffled by black and orange flag call
This marks the second occasion in recent races where Magnussen has been shown the black and orange flag, with this previously occurring at the Canadian Grand Prix in June. Magnussen admits that he cannot recall seeing the flag before in his F1 career, meaning that seeing two in close succession has felt quite unusual to him. "For me, it's a little bit strange," Magnussen told media, including RacingNews365.com . "But, what can I do?"
Magnussen questions whether flag was "necessary"
Magnussen feels that his race was greatly compromised from having to make an early pit-stop, and as such has questioned whether the black and orange flag was necessary. Reflecting on his race, the Dane said: "It was [hard to make the Hard tyres work]. "[I] couldn't really switch it on so it was good to get that off and do some laps on the Medium. "Our race was compromised massively by having to pit that early for the black and orange flag, which I questioned whether it's necessary or not. "I had slight contact with one of the McLarens, just as we got to full power at the exit of Turn 1, something happened in front of him, so he stepped on the brake, and I hit him. "[I] couldn't avoid it, but it wasn't that bad, so I was surprised to get [the black and orange flag]. I did two laps afterwards and the balance was fine, nothing was flapping."
