Kevin Magnussen is set for a race ban after causing a collision during the Italian Grand Prix.

The Haas driver will be forced to sit out the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in two weeks after accumulating too many penalty points.

Entering the weekend at Monza, Magnussen had 10 points on his super licence having tallied them across the course of the current campaign in Saudi Arabia (3), China (2) and Monaco (5).

Any driver that picks up 12 points in the space of 12 months is automatically issued a ban for the next applicable race.

Haas hold the right to appeal the penalty.

Early on during the grand prix, Magnussen attacked Pierre Gasly for position but locked up his tyres into Turn 4 and made contact with the Alpine driver.

The stewards handed Magnussen a 10-second time penalty before later confirming the penalty points.

Should the ban be served, Magnussen would become the first F1 driver to be banned under the penalty point rule that was introduced in 2014.

“Whilst Car 20 had its front axle past the mirror of Car 10, the Driving Standards Guidelines specify that an overtaking car has to “be driven in a safe and controlled manner throughout the manoeuvre',” read a statement from the stewards regarding Magnussen's in-race penalty.

“The Stewards determined that this was not the case for Car 20 and hence the driver was wholly to blame for the collision and hence the standard penalty and penalty points are allocated.”

Oliver Bearman, who will race for Haas in 2025, is the most likely replacement for the Danish driver.
