Liam Lawson dismayed by points heartbreak at incident-ridden Spanish GP

Liam Lawson missed out on adding to his points tally as he pinned the blame on a poorly timed safety car.

Liam Lawson has voiced frustration over missing out on points at the Spanish Grand Prix.

After qualifying outside the top 10, Lawson sought to make progress during the 66 lap race and went on the offensive.

However, he was caught up in a handful of incidents with Alex Albon and Oliver Bearman, with the former sustaining significant front wing damage that eventually led to his retirement from the race.

Lawson stated he was keen to make use of his strong race pace to join team-mate Isack Hadjar inside the points.

“We were just in traffic with good speed, so we had to overtake somehow,” Lawson told media including RacingNews365

“And although we had a pace advantage, it wasn’t easy to overtake.

“There were big moves trying to get through. It just sucks that it all gets unfolded because of the safety car at the end.”

The safety car was called when Kimi Antonelli retired at the side of the track with a power unit failure.

Having stopped just a handful of laps before the safety car was called, Lawson lost out to Fernando Alonso on fresher tyres in the final laps, with the Spaniard crossing the line in 10th place.

“We missed the safety car line by half a second, maybe,” he said. “So that’s just unfortunate.

“We lost so much time behind the safety car that basically everybody was able to start pushing, and we had to just sit behind for four laps.

“We probably should have boxed the first lap when the safety car came out. These situations, sometimes you just don’t know.”
