Liam Lawson has admitted his surprise that Racing Bulls team-mate Arvid Lindblad did not receive a penalty for his role in the safety car restart crash at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Lawson's race ended when he was tipped around by Lindblad at the opening corner, with the incident also eliminating reigning champion Lando Norris.

Lindblad emerged unscathed from the collision and went on to score further points for the team, crossing the line in seventh place.

While Lawson was pleased to see the team add to its points tally, he was left surprised that Lindblad escaped unpunished.

“At the end of the day, from a team perspective, I'm obviously happy that we managed to score points out of that race,” he told media including RacingNews365.

“But in terms of the action in itself, I have absolutely no idea how it wasn't a penalty. I'm sure in another situation with another team or another driver, we probably push very hard [for a penalty].

“You can obviously appeal and stuff like this, that's something you can do. That's why I probably thought at the time, 'oh, maybe it wasn't that bad because there was no penalty'.

“Then after, I went and looked at the incident again, and I was pretty confused.”

Lawson has spoken to Lindblad

Lawson voiced his frustration over team radio at the time of the incident, having come out worse in one of the golden rules of racing.

When asked if he has spoken to Lindblad since the end of the race, Lawson said in Malaysia: “A little bit.

“To be perfectly honest, I had to leave very quickly after the race for a flight. Since then, we've spoken a little bit.

“Obviously, we come here and have to focus on this weekend and put that behind us. In terms of learnings from that incident again, it's something that was kind of outside my control.

“So I don't think those conversations need to be had with me.”
