Lewis Hamilton is set to take a grid penalty at Interlagos this weekend after Ferrari opted for a fresh engine element beyond his season allocation, RacingNews365 understands.
Under FIA sporting regulations, exceeding the permitted number of power unit components triggers a 10-place grid penalty for the first additional element introduced, dropping to five places for any further changes beyond that point.
It remains unclear exactly where Hamilton will be demoted to on the grid once qualifying is completed and whether it is a full engine change.
The timing is notable given the parallel with 2021, when Hamilton took a five-place penalty for fitting a fifth Mercedes engine of that season ahead of the same event.
Starting 10th that day, Hamilton produced one of the defining drives of his career, working through a two-stop strategy on medium and then hard tyres to hunt down and pass Max Verstappen for the win.
Interlagos lends itself to recovery drives of that nature. The long uphill run from Junção through Arquibancadas feeds a slipstreaming blast into the Senna S, setting up a counter-attack opportunity moments later into Turn 4.
The compact 4.309km lap keeps the field tightly bunched across all 71 laps, while heavy tyre degradation through the circuit's high-load corners regularly produces pace deltas that reward cars running fresher rubber.
Changeable weather at the São Paulo venue has historically added another layer of unpredictability, increasing both driver error and the scope for late-race passing moves.
Hamilton arrives at the circuit third in the drivers' championship on 259 points, just two behind Verstappen, with Ferrari needing a repeat of that 2021 charge.
