Lewis Hamilton honoured as Hungaroring names corners after F1 legends

The Hungaroring has revealed the official names for all 14 of its corners as part of the Hungarian Grand Prix's 40th anniversary celebrations, with Lewis Hamilton among the sport's greats to be permanently recognised at the circuit.

The Ferrari driver holds the record as the track's most successful driver, having taken eight victories and nine pole positions at the Budapest venue across his career. Turn 2 now bears his name, a fitting tribute to his unrivalled record at the track.

Alongside Hamilton, Nigel Mansell and Jean Alesi have also had corners named in their honour. All three drivers have left their handprints, which will be cast in concrete and permanently installed in the circuit's run-off area as part of the anniversary commemorations.

The naming process began during last year's event, when fans were invited to vote on their preferred corner names.

Those suggestions were subsequently reviewed by a panel of experts, including motorsport professionals who have been associated with the circuit since the inaugural Hungarian Grand Prix in 1986, as well as senior representatives from the specialist motorsport media.

Mansell's connection to the Hungaroring runs deep. He clinched the 1992 World Championship at the circuit, though Hungary has also served up heartbreak for the Briton.

In 1987, he appeared set for victory before a loose rear wheel nut forced him to retire, only to return two years later and charge from 12th on the grid to take the win.

Turn 11, now officially named 'Alesi', had long been an informal tribute to the Frenchman among fans, following his crash at the corner during practice in 1995. That unofficial name has now been made permanent.

Nelson Piquet lends his name to Turn 1, the site of his famous outside pass on Ayrton Senna during that first race in 1986, a moment that set the tone for decades of memorable racing to follow.

Senna himself is honoured at Turn 13, while Michael Schumacher, who secured his fourth world title at the circuit in 2001, is commemorated at Turn 12.
