Leclerc on lessons learned from racing with Vettel

Charles Leclerc had multiple on track battles with Sebastian Vettel during the former world champion’s time at Ferrari, but the Monegasque driver has said he learnt a lot from his more experienced teammate.

Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel were teammates at Ferrari for two seasons since the Monegasque made the step up to the Scuderia from Alfa Romeo for 2019. In that first season, the younger driver bested the former world champion with several notable victories including a win at Monza, and last year he was comfortably faster than his teammate throughout the year. However, while things got competitive between the two on track, Leclerc told Motorsports.com’s Italian edition that he took many lessons from racing in the same team as Vettel. "Starting with his experience, in certain situations he had great analytical skills, and I think I learned a lot from Seb in this respect," he said. "I realised that the importance he gave to some details in the end made a big difference on the track. It was very interesting for me to evaluate this. Then Seb is a very good person, who has always struck me for being so straightforward." That said, there will be no special treatment for his former teammate if he is overtaken on the track now Vettel has moved to drive for Aston Martin. "I don't think that if such a circumstance happens I'll think: ‘Ah, he was my team-mate and I beat him and now he's in front of me'," he said. "When I lower the visor, I have no room for such thoughts. I focus on myself, on the car and the commitment that awaits me. “If Seb passes me then I will immediately try to take my position back. I don't think I would have any other thoughts in my mind at that moment.”
