Liam Lawson believes that making the switch to Super Formula earlier in the season was "perfect timing" prior to his Formula 1 debut with AlphaTauri. The New Zealander won on his debut with Team Mugen and currently sits second in the championship, with two rounds left at Suzuka. It is likely that he will finish his season in the Japanese series, as it is expected that Daniel Ricciardo will return for the Qatar Grand Prix at the start of October. When asked if the seven races at Super Formula helped with getting up to speed in F1, Lawson told media including RacingNews365 : "It's been really important to be honest, I think it's been perfect timing. The car is a lot closer to Formula 1."
Super Formula car development helped Lawson
Lawson was competing in Formula 2 prior to making the switch to Super Formula, where he finished third in the 2022 season. Although it is billed as an 'F1 feeder series' all of the cars are the same and there is little development that can be done to improve them, something that is different in Super Formula. "With the way the regulations are as well, they are a little more open and you have more development going on within teams," said Lawson. "As a driver you have a lot more learning about how the car works and in F1 that's hugely important, something we just didn't quite get enough from in F2."
