Laurent Mekies Team principal Red Bull Racing

Laurent Mekies was Racing Director and engineer at the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team. From 2024, Mekies replaced Franz Tost as team principal at Visa Cash App RB, and was promoted to replace the sacked Christian Horner at Red Bull in July 2025. About Laurent Mekies

Mekies was born in Tours, France, on April 28, 1977. He obtained his degree in mechanical engineering from ESTACA School in Paris. He spent his final year of studies at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.
 

Laurent Mekies F1

Mekies' first involvement in Formula 1 came in 2001 with the Arrows F1 team. A year later, he joined Minardi, where he worked alongside Jos Verstappen, Mark Webber and many more famous drivers. He remained in Faenza, Italy, in the following years. When Minardi was rebranded as Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2006, Mekies was appointed Chief Engineer. From that point forward, he was responsible for all operational aspects of the team, from car design at the factory to on-track performance.

In 2014, Mekies left Toro Rosso to join the FIA as Safety Director. During this period, he focused on medical matters, safety initiatives, and development work, not only in Formula 1 but also across various FIA championships. In early 2017, he was appointed F1 Deputy Race Director, working alongside Charlie Whiting. Mekies oversaw matters related to sporting regulations in all FIA single-seater categories.
 

Laurent Mekies Ferrari

In September 2018, Mekies departed from the FIA to assume the role of Sporting Director at Scuderia Ferrari. Starting in 2019, he also took on the position of Head of Track & Performance Area, in addition to his existing responsibilities. Since 2021, Mekies has held the positions of Racing Director and Head of Track & Performance Area at the Italian team.

Laurent Mekies Team Principal, Visa Cash App RB

In April 2023, it was announced that Mekies would return to his former team, Visa Cash App RB (previously Toro Rosso), starting in 2024. As part of a reorganisation, Visa Cash App RB secured the services of the prominent French Formula 1 figure. Mekies will replace Franz Tost as the team principal for Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar.

Laurent Mekies - Red Bull Team Principal and CEO

On July 9th, 2025, Christian Horner was sacked by Red Bull after 20 years at the helm. Mekies was immediately promoted from Racing Bulls to replace Horner as team boss and CEO. His first race in charge was the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.
