Lando Norris has developed "emotional racing resilience" and can now elevate "the game to a further level", his McLaren boss Andrea Stella believes.

2025 champion Norris has at times struggled with his self-confidence, and was open about battles with mental health early in his career, but is currently in a rich vein of form in grand prix racing, and pulled off an unlikely pole position at the Spanish GP.

Norris had missed all of FP2 at the new circuit with a gearbox issue, and was only sixth after the first runs in Q3 in Madrid, but on his final lap, stole P1 away from Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011s.

He lost out in the race due to an unlucky virtual safety car, but had comfortably pulled away from the pack before the race was neutralised, and was set for a third win in four races.

Reflecting on Norris's performance, his team principal explained that he regarded the Briton's pole lap as one of the most impressive he had seen in his 450 grands prix in F1.

"I would say that for the risk he took following such an incredible lap, he was almost lenient on himself," Stella told media, including RacingNews365.

"But Lando has developed a lot of emotional racing resilience, and he is able to access the best of his potential more regularly, and he's able at times to elevate the game to a further level.

"I would say that it was one of the most impressive laps I've witnessed as somebody who has watched telemetry for 450 grands prix.

"The most impressive thing is that it was pole position, despite having lost three-and-a-half tenths in the last corner, which means it could have been a pretty convincing pole position."

Why the lap waa so good

Then explaining why Norris's lap was so special, Stella broke down how Norris's performance could be seen at various stages of the lap, including all the phases of a corner.

"At the same time, it was a consequence of pushing to the level that Lando managed to push to, and when you look at the telemetry, it is the precision, the braking, the speed carried on entry, the striking of the kerb, the going on power," he said.

"Everything was executed with a pretty unique level of precision, and for me, the main attribute that would be associated with this lap was just incredible precision in the metre-by-metre execution.

"I think Lando offered one of the best performances of his career."
