Kimi Antonelli suffered an unusual Mercedes failure in the British Grand Prix, ending his victory hopes and denting his title chances.
Running second and within five seconds of leader Charles Leclerc on 10-lap fresh tyres, Antonelli suffered a front wheel shield failure, destroying the balance on his Mercedes.
He pitted twice, once for a new front-wing to try to solve the problem and again to try to have the problem fixed, but dropped places down the order, even though he tried to keep going to rescue a points finish.
However, Antonelli might have been saved for a points finish after a late safety car following Max Verstappen spinning off in the closing stages.
