Kimi Antonelli has issued a defiant statement of intent about his F1 title credentials, insisting he is ready to fight for the championship despite his relative inexperience at the highest level.
The Italian, now in just his second season, has surged to the top of the F1 drivers' standings after securing back-to-back grand prix victories, establishing himself as a genuine championship contender.
Antonelli’s rapid rise has been one of the defining stories of the campaign so far, particularly given that he only completed his rookie season last year.
Speaking to BILD, the 19-year-old admitted the sudden spotlight can feel surreal, but warned of the dangers that come with early success.
"It’s easy to lose focus and get carried away when everyone’s celebrating you," he said. "But I’ve also noticed that expectations of me have changed drastically."
To manage that pressure, Antonelli revealed he avoids social media during race weekends, keeping his attention fixed on the long season ahead, with 19 rounds still to run.
However, it was his assessment of his own championship chances that underlined a quietly confident mindset beyond his years.
"Experience is my biggest weakness compared to drivers like George [Russell], no question. You can’t buy that," Antonelli explained.
"But I’m confident that I’d still have a chance if the opportunity arose. I’ve been working towards this for many years, and my [first] victory showed that I can beat anyone if I perform to my potential."
Despite his limited tally of just 27 grands prix starts, Antonelli’s belief has been reinforced by his early-season results, which have placed him ahead of more established names in the standings, including his team-mate, who sits nine points behind in second.
Yet the Mercedes driver was equally clear that raw speed alone will not be enough to sustain a championship challenge.
"To do that, I need to get the basics right. My team and I constantly remind ourselves of that," the young Italian added.
