After storming through the karting and junior formula ranks in both South America and Europe, Montoya would gain the attention of the F1 paddock in 1997 while driving for Helmut Marko’s RSM Marko team in the Formula 3000 series. He would finish second in his rookie year missing out on the championship by 1.5 points.

The Colombian signed for Williams as a reserve driver in 1998 and won the Formula 3000 title, beating out future F1 driver Nick Heidfeld. Montoya would then move to America to compete in the CART Championship where he would win the title in his debut season, a feat achieved by Nigel Mansell six years earlier, beating out the more experienced Dario Franchitti. He would also become the series’ youngest champion at 24 years old. The Columbian would spend another season in America finishing a disappointing ninth after switching to Toyota engines.

Montoya would then make his long-awaited Formula 1 debut in 2001 racing alongside Ralf Schumacher for Williams. His first season in F1 would see him finish sixth scoring one win at Monza. The following year would see him finish third in the drivers’ standings with seven podiums and no wins in a year that was dominated by Ferrari. Two wins followed in 2003, and the Colombian would then spend one final year at Williams winning one race at the 2004 season finale in Brazil.

A year and half at McLaren followed. His first season would be a success on the whole with the South American driver claiming three wins and fourth overall in the drivers’ standings. Prior to the start of the 2006 season, however, McLaren team principal Ron Dennis announced that two-time world champion Fernando Alonso would be joining the team in 2007. This led to a deteriorating relationship between the two parties and Montoya would leave the team after 10 races.

While he would never return to F1, Montoya would go on to achieve great success across several categories of motorsport including NASCAR, Indycar and sportscars both in America and in Europe.
