Jos Verstappen reveals surprising trait behind Max's F1 dominance

Jos Verstappen has detailed one of the "surprising" traits that makes his son Max dominant in Formula 1.

The Red Bull driver sealed his third F1 World Championship with second in the Qatar Grand Prix Sprint before going on to take a 14th victory out of 17 races this term in Sunday's race.

His points tally of 433 in the Drivers' Championship is enough to single-handedly win the Constructors' title for Red Bull, showing how dominant this car and driver combination with the RB19 has been.

"He's surprising me how easily he does everything, but also with his motivation," Verstappen Sr told Formula.hu.

It took Verstappen six seasons before winning his first title, however, Jos believes that his son has not changed his approach despite appearing more mature on track since his title success.

"It's the same Max as three or four years ago, the only difference is that he has a fantastic car around him and the people who he works with," he explained.

"But still, you have to be there every weekend and the details make the difference.

"If he had this car four years ago, I wouldn't say he would win a lot of them races, but for sure he was very close to what we have seen [this year]."

Jos: Max is unbelievable

Although Verstappen was seen as an upcoming talent in his junior category days, the Dutchman had to work hard to produce the results early on in his career to get noticed.

Once he started winning in Formula 3 it caught the eye of both Red Bull and Mercedes, with the former eventually giving him a fast-track seat to F1.

His landmark outing in FP1 with Toro Rosso during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix at just 17 years-old proved he was ready, but Jos believes this trait was always present in his early karting days.

"I've talked about it a lot with him and it's not only to win the World Championship, but first of all to come into Formula 1 - but that was quite quickly fixed," said Verstappen Sr.

"Then of course you want to win, but also in the last years of karting he had something that I would say was special.

"You can see it still now, it's unbelievable and I think with the experience it makes him better. The way he's just doing it, makes it look very easy."
