Jos Verstappen has conceded he is in the dark regarding Red Bull's 2026 power unit project. New technical regulations will come into play in just over a year, with major changes made to both the engine and chassis departments. Red Bull is constructing its power unit for the first time and has entered a partnership with Ford to do so. Max Verstappen's father Jos, however, has conceded he is not hearing how the plans are progressing regarding Red Bull's new era. "I don't really hear much about it anymore," he told Formule1.nl . “The program is running as expected. Nobody knows how good the engine and car will be in 2026. You only find out when it is actually on the track.”
Still no guarantees over Max future
Max Verstappen, who won his fourth F1 title this year, is currently contracted until the end of the 2028 season at Red Bull. However, there have been suggestions the Dutchman could depart early - with Jos admitting his future is not set in stone. “A lot depends on what all happens at Red Bull," he added. "Look, if they get it right again next year and we're competing at the front, then Max will just stay.” However, Jos has backed Red Bull to continue to field a competitive car for the years to come. “I do feel that things are still good and that they definitely want to continue,” Verstappen Sr added. “I don't think they are thinking of quitting. The fact that they are going to develop their own engine from 2026 also shows how they are in it. “Then you commit yourself for the longer term. You don't make a huge investment like that for a few years. For Red Bull, Formula 1 is still the ultimate marketing machine."
