Jenson Button made his Formula 1 debut in 2000 for Williams. The relatively inexperienced Englishman impressed many by giving his more experienced teammate, Ralf Schumacher, a run for his money as he became Britain’s youngest ever driver and youngest ever to score a point. A crash behind the safety car at Monza would expose his inexperience but Button would finish the championship eighth overall with 12 points.

Though Williams elected to field Juan Pablo Montoya the following year, they loaned Button out to Benetton for 2001 and 2002. Often accused of living a “playboy” lifestyle, the Englishman had a difficult two years at the Enstone based team. The team’s principal, Flavio Briatore eventually decided to promote a young Fernando Alonso to the team with Button moving to BAR from 2003 onwards. In his two years with the Benetton and Renault team, he could only manage a best result of fourth.

Button’s switch to BAR would yield better fortune, with the team eventually becoming the works Honda outfit. The Brit would go on to experience success as a driver claiming his first pole, podium, and win with the Brackley based outfit. He would also achieve a career-best third overall in the driver’s standings in 2004.

Honda would pull out of the sport at the end of the 2008 season which left Button without a drive for 2009. Fortunately, the team was sold to Ross Brawn for a nominal fee and the 2009 season would represent one of F1’s greatest fairytales. After winning the first six of seven races, Button would go on to claim the 2009 championship, with Brawn winning the constructors’ title despite the team falling behind in the pecking order over the course of the year. This would represent his best year in Formula 1 and he would ultimately sign for McLaren for 2010, partnering fellow Brit and world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Button’s initial years at McLaren would be a success, as he would claim second in the 2011 driver’s standings and eight wins over the course of his first three years with the team before a period of decline. Button scored his last podium in F1 at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix.

Button retired from Formula 1 at the end of the 2016 season, though he made a one-off appearance at the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix, replacing Fernando Alonso who decided to compete in the Indy 500.
