The past of James Allison

Born on February 14, 1968, in Louth, England, marks the beginning of James Allison's Formula 1 career in the early '90s when he brought his expertise to the Benetton Formula team, later known as Renault F1. His academic background in mechanical engineering and aerodynamics provided him with the ideal qualifications to excel in the complex technical world of Formula 1.

Return as Technical Director of Mercedes

In 2013, James Allison joined the Scuderia Ferrari team as Technical Director. Here, he played an essential role in the advancement of Ferrari's cars and the pursuit of championship titles. After a successful period with Ferrari, he made the transition to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.

At Mercedes, a team that established dominance in the sport for some time, Allison leveraged his technical expertise to make Mercedes cars even more competitive. Under his skilled leadership, the team secured multiple driver and constructor titles, solidifying his enduring influence in Formula 1.

After 2021, James Allison was no longer the Technical Director of the German team. In April 2023, the Briton genuinely returned as the Technical Director of the Mercedes team.

James Allison takes over the role from Mike Elliott

This is not the first time that Allison and Elliott have swapped roles. Between 2017 and 2021, Allison already held the position of Technical Director, after which he became Chief Technical Officer. Mike Elliott, who succeeded Allison as Technical Director in 2021, will now once again take on this role from him.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff also provided some additional insight into the decision to switch the roles of Allison and Elliott again in the British magazine Autosport. "The idea came from Mike. He has risen to the position of CTO because of his brilliant scientific mind. James Allison is returning to his position as Technical Director and will primarily report to Mike. With James, we have a warrior in the field. The troops go for him and with him through the fire."

James Allison's most well-known designs
