Isack Hadjar has admitted surprise over race control's decision to restart the British Grand Prix when visibility due to rain was still so low.
Hadjar retired from the race on lap 18 after colliding with the rear of Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes car into Copse corner.
The Frenchman was near-blind heading into the turn due to the spray that was being kicked up as the pack ran closely together following a safety car restart.
The safety car in question was deployed due to the adverse conditions, however race control felt the weather had settled enough to get back underway.
Hadjar, who was uninjured in the high-speed shunt, disagreed.
“The restart, it was the worst visibility ever,” Hadjar told media including RacingNews365.
“For me, there was no point racing in these conditions, because already in the laps under the safety car I couldn't see much.
“The tyre temperatures were going down. It was becoming tricky.
“I was actually quite surprised we didn't wait for better conditions, but in the end, it [the crash] was quite predictable.”
Hadjar was one of a handful of if drivers who pitted at the end of the formation lap for a set of slick tyres as the track began to dry.
While it ultimately proved to be the wrong strategy, Hadjar assessed his pace was encouraging before he crashed.
“It was quite a complicated race,” he said. “The pace was very good.
“I was following Charles [Leclerc]on the same strategy, but it was the wrong one, just like George [Russell].
“So we all shot into pita before the end of the formation lap, it just didn't pay off.”
