Max Verstappen's Formula 1 future remains uncertain, and Red Bull faces a potential dilemma should the four-time world champion decide to walk away at the end of 2026.
According to reports, the Milton Keynes-based team views Oscar Piastri as an ideal replacement if Verstappen follows through on his retirement hints.
The Dutchman has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the current regulations, telling BBC Radio 5 Live after the Japanese Grand Prix in March: "I'm thinking about everything inside this paddock.
"I want to be here to have fun and have a great time and enjoy myself. At the moment that's not really the case."
Verstappen's frustration centres on the 2026 power unit regulations, which he has described as feeling unnatural to a racing driver. However, FIA changes announced in May for 2027 could yet tempt him to stay.
The governing body agreed in principle to shift the power split away from the current 50/50 balance between internal combustion engine and electrical power toward a ratio closer to 60/40, with a nominal ICE power increase of 50 kW. This move addresses Verstappen's criticisms of the energy-management burden.
Yet if Verstappen departs, Piastri emerges as a compelling candidate. The 25-year-old Australian has compiled nine career wins and 28 podiums across 72 grands prix, including a strong 2025 campaign that saw him finish third in the championship with seven victories.
His calm, consistent approach and proven race-craft would suit Red Bull's requirements for a lead driver capable of challenging for titles.
Is Piastri the right driver to replace Verstappen?
