Two-time IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden has levelled a swipe at Formula 1 docuseries Drive to Survive for "twisting" storylines.

The fly-on-the-wall show returned this year for a fifth season, with filming for the sixth already underway. Drive to Survive has been credited for helping push the boom in popularity of F1 since first airing in 2019, with circuits flooded with record attendances at events since the relaxation of Covid restrictions.

Such has been the success of the show, Netflix has commissioned equivalents in the world of golf, tennis and Rugby Union.

IndyCar has also opted to ride the wave of success with its own behind-the-scenes series, titled 100 Days to Indy, which will focus on the run-up to the Indianapolis 500. The premiere for the first episode, to be shown on United States channel The CW, was held ahead of IndyCar's Long Beach Grand Prix.

IndyCar product 'so good'

Penske racer Newgarden also attended the premiere of the first episode of 100 Days to Indy. During a Q&A after the preview, he elaborated on the differences between Drive to Survive and the new IndyCar offering.

"The competition [in IndyCar] is so good that nothing needs to be made up, unlike some other motorsport products," the 2017 and 2019 champion jibed.

"The product [IndyCar's 100 Days to Indy] as it is is good enough that they don't have to search for things or twist things."
