How George Russell crushed Baku rivals in jaw-dropping masterclass

George Russell claimed pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a margin over his closest challenger not seen in Formula 1 since Max Verstappen's Canadian Grand Prix pole in 2023.

The Mercedes driver set a best time of 1:42.526 around the Baku City Circuit, finishing 0.837 seconds clear of Charles Leclerc in second. Oscar Piastri completed the top three for McLaren, just 0.001 seconds behind Leclerc.

It is the biggest gap between first and second on the grid since Verstappen's 1.244-second advantage in Montreal three years ago, in what was the most dominant qualifying performance of the new power unit regulations.

Russell's advantage stemmed from a session in which few rivals could match his pace throughout Q3. Isack Hadjar took fourth for Red Bull ahead of Lando Norris, while Lewis Hamilton headed the second half of the top six for Ferrari.

Further down the order, Max Verstappen could only manage eighth, over a second and a half slower than Russell's benchmark time, as the Dutchman struggled with apparent battery problems having initially looked set to be a real threat for pole.

Baku's characteristics played a part in shaping the gaps across the field. The street circuit's long straights reward drivers who can exploit a tow, while the mix of a resurfaced middle sector and a bumpy old-asphalt section elsewhere on the lap has made one-lap pace notoriously difficult to nail down consistently across a session.

Track evolution through the weekend has also been significant, with rubber going down steadily on the smoother sections of tarmac as sessions progressed, a factor that can widen or narrow gaps depending on when a driver sets their best lap.

Pole margins of the size Russell produced in Baku remain a rarity in the current era of F1, where closely matched car performance and a single knockout qualifying format tend to compress the field into fractions of a second. 

Large gaps of this scale now tend to point either to a driver hitting a perfect lap while others compromise theirs, or to a car finding a sudden step in performance that rivals cannot immediately answer.

Russell will start Sunday's race from pole, with Leclerc and Piastri completing the top three.
