Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has revealed that the Austrian outfit became "nervous" for Max Verstappen when the late safety car was deployed.

Verstappen controlled the entirety of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix after overtaking Oscar Piastri for the lead at the first corner, following a staggering overtake.

The Dutchman went around the outside of the championship leader, before cruising into the distance.

However, a late safety car brought McLaren back into the race, although it had no response to Verstappen's pace.

It marked Verstappen's second win of the season and his fourth in a row in Imola, with the performance having confirmed to the team that it's upgrades package worked.

"I think the updates that have been implemented have now had their full effect," Marko told Sky DE. "We were actually the same or better than McLaren in terms of tyre wear.

"And Max did his laps. Then the safety car came at the end and there went the 18-second lead. We were a bit nervous, but then he pulled away impressively."

In what has been a rarity for Red Bull at times, it secured a double points finish, courtesy of Yuki Tsunoda recovering from a pit lane start to finish in P10.

Red Bull had to rebuild almost an entire new car to enter Tsunoda into the race after his terrifying qualifying crash. In the end, the Japanese driver put in a strong display.

"Yuki also had a very good race and finished in the points," added Marko. "So all in all I am very satisfied."
